French boy fabricates kidnapping story to avoid dental appointment
by Dental Tribune International
SAINT-GERVAIS-LES-BAINS, France: French police have spent a month investigating a case of kidnapping that turned out to be false. The sequence of events and description of the kidnapper—all made up by a 12-year-old boy—were described so detailed that the investigators only became suspicious when they checked CCTV images of the site of the alleged crime.
As reported by French paper Midi Libre and website www.thelocal.fr, police were patrolling the Alpine village of St Gervais on 21 May when they saw a boy hiding. When questioned by the police, the 12-year-old told them he had been abducted from the nearby town of Bagnols-sur-Cèze whilst on his way to a dental appointment. A man had pulled up to ask for directions and had then dragged the boy into his car. The boy stated that he had managed to escape by chance when the car stopped in St Gervais.
According to the boy, the man was in his thirties, European looking, and of muscular build with a height of around 1.7 m and a vertical scar on his right cheek. He was wearing a black shirt and light jeans. The boy was also able to give details of what happened during the abduction and about the car the man was driving.
Police drew up an E-FIT image of the alleged abductor and launched an investigation. However, inconsistencies—which were not disclosed—became apparent when viewing CCTV images captured in the town of Bagnols.
Under further questioning, the boy eventually admitted that he had invented the entire story because he had been afraid to go to his dental appointment.
